    Frequently asked questions

What is FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early)?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It is a movement built around saving and investing an aggressive share of your income so your portfolio can eventually cover your living expenses. Once your investments reach roughly 25 times your annual spending, paid work becomes optional. Many people pursue FIRE less to stop working entirely and more to gain full control over how they spend their time.

    What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the point where your current investments, left untouched, will grow to a full FIRE number by your target retirement age with no further contributions. Once you reach it, you no longer need to save for retirement and only need to cover your current expenses. Your existing portfolio coasts on compound growth, giving you freedom to work less, switch careers, or take work you enjoy more.

    What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule is a guideline suggesting you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in your first year of retirement, then adjust that amount for inflation each year, with a strong chance the money lasts 30 years or more. It comes from the Trinity study of historical market returns. A 4% safe withdrawal rate is the same as needing 25 times your annual expenses invested.

How do I calculate my FIRE number?

Your FIRE number is the amount you need invested to live off withdrawals indefinitely. Calculate it by dividing your desired annual expenses by your safe withdrawal rate. At a 4% rate, that means multiplying annual expenses by 25. If you expect to spend $40,000 a year, your FIRE number is $1,000,000. Lower spending or a higher withdrawal rate reduces the target, so tracking real expenses matters.
